The beautiful Bellarine Peninsula (Wadawurrung: Balla-wein or Biteyong) is the ideal destination for a summer vacay. There is a wonderful spread of Bellarine Peninsula accommodation, from sandy beach shacks to super-chic villas; the vibe is voguishly relaxed; the shopping and dining are top-notch; and the beaches are gorgeous. There is always more to discover on the Peninsula – the following are just a handful of our Regional Escapes favourites.

Snorkel to a sunken paddle steamer at Indented Heads
Crafted in Scotland in 1886, the Ozone was regarded as one of the finest paddle steamers ever built and became known in Victoria as the ‘Greyhound of Port Phillip’ for its speed. The boat served cross-bay travellers and holidaymakers until 1918, then was finally dismantled in 1925 and the hull sunk offshore at Indented Head. The site today is marked with an onshore monument and anchor, but you can also get up close and personal by snorkelling out to the wreck – a haven for a kaleidoscope of colourful sea life.

Ramble the rockpools of Barwon Heads Bluff
This series of rockpools near the mouth of the Barwon River is a local marine life extravaganza. Indeed, they’re a part of the Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary, itself a small part of the Great Southern Reef, a unique temperate marine ecosystem with 30% to 80% of its species found nowhere else. A walking track snakes around the headland for blow-your-mind ocean and estuary views, while low tide reveals the rock pools, ready to be explored.

Make gelato memories on the Bellarine Peninsula
Is there anything more satisfying than an ice cream by the ocean? Well, yes – a small-batch artisan gelato by the ocean probably wins out! Miss Gina Gelato in Clifton Springs offers authentic Italian gelato and sorbet (try the After Dinner Mint for nostalgic deliciousness), while Coffetti in Barwon Heads whips up refreshing gelato and beautiful coffee-based bevvies.
